Fair Pricing for Construction Quotes
In recent years, the concept of free quotations has become a widespread practice in the UK construction industry. While initially intended as a way to help customers make informed decisions, the reality is that this system is often misused. Many clients now see free quotations as an opportunity to collect multiple estimates, compare prices, and simply choose the cheapest option. But does the lowest price always mean the best choice? (We’ve already discussed this in a previous blog.)
The Misuse of Free Quotations and the Need for Fair Pricing in Construction Quotes
Too often, potential clients request free quotations from multiple companies without any real intention of hiring them. This results in professionals wasting time and money on site visits, consultations, and detailed assessments, only for the client to select the lowest bidder. While competition is a natural part of business, the issue lies in the fact that many companies invest significant resources in preparing accurate quotes, offering expert advice, and explaining technical details—only to be used as a reference point for negotiating a lower price elsewhere.
Should Quotations Be Paid?
In many other professions, consultations are always paid for. Whether it’s a doctor, dentist, lawyer, or beautician, their time and expertise come at a cost. So why should construction services be any different? Builders, electricians, and other tradespeople provide valuable knowledge and assessments, yet they are expected to do so for free.
A fair solution would be to introduce a refundable quotation fee, such as £100, which would be deducted from the final cost of the project if the client proceeds with the work. This system would:
Filter out non-serious inquiries, ensuring that only genuinely interested clients request quotes.
Compensate professionals for their time and expertise, reducing unnecessary travel and consultations.
Improve the quality of services, as companies wouldn’t have to rush through multiple free quotations to stay competitive.
The Bigger Picture
If this practice continues unchecked, businesses will suffer, leading to more financial strain on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It also lowers industry standards, as customers who select the cheapest option often end up with poor-quality work, requiring additional repairs and ultimately costing them more in the long run.
Think about it this way: When choosing a doctor, do you look for the cheapest one or the one who can truly help you? The same logic applies to construction—quality, experience, and reliability should take precedence over price alone.
Time for Change
The industry must rethink the way quotations are handled. A small fee for quotations could bring much-needed balance, ensuring fairness for both clients and professionals. This topic deserves serious discussion on a larger scale, as it affects both service providers and customers alike.
